Realization(s) from my freak accident

I’m going to leave out the gory details… but I will admit… this story is not for the weary. I had a freak accident on Tuesday morning at 7:00 am. Found myself in the ER. In surgery. And back home by 3:00 p.m.

Why? I lost my pinky toe. Yes. You read that right.

I, admittedly very stupidly, decided to shut the large iron gate outside my home, barefoot. And you guessed it. Not paying attention, my foot was on the track and I opened the gate right over my toe. Instant amputation! Somehow I didn’t scream or pass out — but, I took me (and my toe) to the ER.

Foot

You may be thinking, Krisstina… 1. Why the hell are you telling me this and 2. Are you okay!?

To answer #2. Yes. I’m okay. I sit here the day after writing this. And, I must admit, I’m in pretty good spirits.

Why am I telling you this? Well, I’m hoping my realization(s) that came out of this accident can serve you as well.

I’ve had many “What does this mean and why am I here” moments in my life — and this was yet another one of them.

Yesterday, I found myself hurt, scared, sad, grieving and grateful — all wrapped up in one.

It’s odd the feeling of losing a body part, albeit small. I definitely grieved the loss. And, came to terms pretty quickly that my future days would include wearing flip flops sans a pinky toe. I was in a decent amount of pain and sat a bit scared in the ER facing unexpected emergency surgery. There can always be complications going ‘under’ which became abundantly clear as they were asking me if my will and medical directives were up to date.

Reality was very present and real. No way to bullshit myself out of that one.  In addition to all those fearful feelings, I also felt an enormous amount of gratitude. I was actually very lucky that I only lost a toe. It could have been a far worse accident. I could have easily severed more toes or even my entire foot. Believe me, I’ve never been more thankful for my feet and toes!

It was a reminder of how easily it is to take advantage of the small things, as small as a pinky toe. Who knew I’d miss not having one. And, that a missing toe makes my active lifestyle of running, cycling, yoga-ing a little more challenging. That little toe is important for balance. Perhaps a reminder of the consequences for being out-of-balance for too long. This accident was a good wakeup call. Another chance to reflect on the little things that are really important.

I am also grateful for the outpouring of love. In my little social circle, word got around fast and within minutes I had offers of help to bring food, supplies, hugs, you name it. My kiddos were right there with some good toe jokes to keep things light. And, to help take care of mom in her less than stellar moment! Health, Family, and Friends. It’s what life is about. Another reminder that what matters most.

Shifting gears slightly, it’s hard to broach the topic of health, fulfillment, and freedom without talking about how I got here. I’m talking about the money piece. I get questions regularly on how I got my life back in 2013. And how, since, I’ve designed my life to be fully sovereign and free. Both financially and otherwise.

How many people do you know who are financially fulfilled and free? I mean, it’s freedom we all want and seek. Entrepreneurs galore who risk everything to get it — but how many actually have “it” –” it” being the freedom to not have to grind to crank out that next month’s paycheck.

If creating financial sovereignty and freedom were obvious, far more hard-working entrepreneurs would have it.

My little accident made me even more grateful for my freedom. To have the space to sit back and heal without any more worry than necessary.

If freedom is something you want, let me teach you.

Regardless — I hope my accident causes a little reflection for you too. What might you be taking for granted? Who’s that special someone who would be there with and for you if you found yourself in the ER and facing emergency surgery? Maybe he or she needs a hug and a few words of appreciation.

Warmly,
Krisstina

PS: If you are reading this after November 30th — it’s never too late to join the Campus. Checkout all the details here!
